Keren Brown Wilson mixed apartment privacy, dormitory communal life and health-clinic support to craft Southwest Portland’s Park Place, often cited as America’s first assisted living facility.
In the 29 years since Park Place opened, 40,000 more assisted living facilities have sprung up nationwide, luring older residents who need some help with everyday life but want more independence than traditional nursing homes offer. But Oregon has kept its place as a leader in assisted living, channeling lots of Medicare users into the system and licensing hundreds of new facilities.
Oregon ranks third-highest of the 50 states in its supply of assisted living care, according to a new study by Harvard Medical School faculty. In 2007, the state had about 43 assisted living beds for every 1,000 residents 65 and older, nearly twice the national average.

Courtyard at Mt. Tabor is holding a wreath decorating contest for local businesses. They’ll provide the wreath, you decorate it to advertise your business or service.
Who: Doctors, Home Health, Hospice, Vendors, Volunteers, Service Groups and Churches
When: Wreaths to be decorated and returned to Courtyard at Mt. Tabor no later than December 14th.
Entry Fee: $5
Judging: December 18th, by Courtyard at Mt. Tabor residents and guests
Where: Bring entry form with $5 entry fee and wreath to Courtyard at Mt. Tabor no later than December 14th. Decorated wreaths will be displayed throughout the common areas in the Senior Living Community for the residents and guests to enjoy!
Awards: Presented at a Holiday Pancake Breakfast Buffet on Friday, December 18th, 8:30-10:30am. Your entry includes two breakfast tickets. Additional tickets are available.
Grand Prize: $500 Visa gift card for the office, or a $500 donation to your favorite charity!
